The weekly topics are as follows:
Week 1: Introduction to the course
During your first session, you will learn how the Web works and the the tool you will need to create websites.
You will be introduced to HTML5 as the language for presenting content on a web page. You will understand the anatomy of a web page by way of example. You will In this introduction session, you will also be introduced to to Cascading Style Sheets, and shown how to validate your HTML code.
Week 2: Structuring your web page
In this class, you will look at some of the HTML5 tags that help define the structure of a page. Each page in a website will have different content but each page should follow a common brand as the other pages in the website. You will learn about Structuring Page Content, Document Structure Tags, Paragraphs, Line Breaks, Headings, Horizontal Rules, List Structures, and how to Link Pages.
Week 3: Building blocks of practical web design
In session 3, you will delve into key building blocks for web design, including Working with Fonts, Text Blocks, and Lists.You will also explore using Tables to Display Information, Using External and Internal Links and Working with Colors, Images, and Multimedia content such as video and audio files.
Week 4: Style and layout with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
In this session, we will do a deep dive into CSS – you will learn how to improve the aesthetic appeal of your web pages by text formatting, positioning of images, applying special styles.
Especially, you will explore CSS Rules, CSS Syntax and Style, In-line Style Sheets, Embedded Style Sheets, Linked Style Sheets, including Comments in your Style Sheets and how to Apply Style Sheets.
Week 5: More on text formatting and web page styling
Handling your web page layout, and look and feel is an important matter as aesthetic appeal can either mean you have significant traffic to your site or not.
In this session, we explore further regarding text styling, to strengthen your skills on Font Style Tags, Text & Background Colors and Special Characters. For images you will look at how to use CSS to display images in parts of your page, as well as image size and other effects, Background Images and Image Transparency. You will also look at how to apply special styles for Styling Lists, Borders and Padding, Sizing Elements and Positioning Elements.
Week 6: Dynamic features with JavaScript
By now, you are ready to add another skill to your repertoire, you will learn how to use JavaScript to include dynamic features into your website. In particular, you will learn how to receive and process user input on your web page. JavaScript is a robust scripting language, and you will
explore JavaScript Data Operations and how JavaScript works, Script Decision Making, Script Iterations and handling arrays of data among other foundational aspects of JavaSCript.
Week 7: Forms and form data processing
In this session, you will you will learn how to work with Forms to receive and process user input. In particular, you will learn how to create forms, text boxes, text areas and other data input controls such as checkboxes and radio buttons, also drop-down lists. You will learn how to style your data entry forms using CSS.
Week 8: Tables and table styling with CSS
In this session, we revisit an important information presentation control – the table. You will learn how to create and use tables and how to position tables using CSS. The key to working with tables includes Creating Tables, working with Table Borders, Table Captioning, handling Table Colors & Background, Table Size & Alignment, Aligning Text & Cells, and Column & Row Spanning.
Week 9: Integrating multimedia content to your web pages
Due to high speed internet connectivity, we are now heavily reliant on sound and movies for delivering Web page content. It might be that you want to embed a video that is hosted elsewhere (e.g., Vimeo or Youtube). This session will look at how to integrate multimedia content in your web page using HTML5 tags as well as CSS. You will learn about various Audio & Video Formats, Playing Audio, Playing Video and how to Embedding these into your web page.
Week 10: Presenting your website project
Over your learning journey, your tutor will be encouraging you to build a mini project, whether it is your personal profile showing a portfolio of your skills, the projects you have undertaken so far, or a website showcasing your own business idea.
This session will be an opportunity to present what you have done so far, and to describe what you would like to do further.
